The Perch Webinar: Bears, Helicopters, & Bar-Tailed Godwits
Free Members-only Zoom Webinar
When most of us think of shorebirds in our Gulf Coast region, we probably picture scuttling masses of plain birds on mudflats or in rice fields. However, this is just one piece of the annual cycle for many species, including those that nest at high latitudes within the Arctic. For the past two decades, ambitious biologists have taken to the tundra to systematically survey and estimate populations of breeding shorebirds. Why do these birds fly so far? What does tundra look and smell like when it isn’t covered in snow? Do birds sleep when there’s 24 hours of daylight? How might shifting climate trends and other anthropogenic changes affect nesting? Wyatt Egelhoff, our Sanctuary Manager, will discuss these topics and much more while detailing his experience this past June working with fellow shorebird biologists in the Far North.
