Peach Creek Woods Nature Sanctuary
Peach Creek Woods Nature Sanctuary is located in Montgomery County. This protected habitat was made possible through a generous land bequest from the late Thomas Lee Maddux, a dedicated educator and lifelong conservationist who passed away in February 2025.
The 128-acre property features a rich tapestry of mixed pine and hardwood forest situated along Peach Creek, a vital component of the San Jacinto River watershed. Located approximately 10 miles southwest of Cleveland, Texas, the sanctuary sits in a region that has experienced significant population growth over the last decade. The protection of this acreage ensures that critical habitat for birds is preserved amidst increasing local development.
“Protecting habitat for birds and providing nature experiences for people is more important than ever,” said Houston Audubon’s Land Conservation Director, Pete Deichmann. “Peach Creek Woods serves as a testament to the impact one individual can have on the future of our ecosystem.”
The benefactor, Thomas Lee Maddux, was a "paragon of dedication to Texas nature". A retired teacher who was fluent in English, Spanish and French, Tom spent his life teaching others about language, culture, and the vital importance of environmental preservation. He was a skilled naturalist who was instrumental in conservation efforts across Texas and Colorado, including foundational work with the Texas Land Conservancy and the San Isabel Land Protection Trust.
“By entrusting this land to Houston Audubon, Tom has ensured that his passion for the natural world will continue to inspire and provide a haven for wildlife for generations to come,” said Houston Audubon’s President and CEO, Jed Aplaca.
Houston Audubon plans to open the sanctuary to the public in early 2027 after performing essential improvements to ensure the land is ready for safe and sustainable public access.
