Natives Nursery

  • Visit the nursery and choose from wildflowers, grasses and forbs to increase the biodiversity of your habitat. Our plants are hyper-local material collected only from heritage prairies and so are extra tough to thrive in our variable climate. Native plants support native bees, butterflies and birds.

Pro tip: if you want to consult with our volunteers about the plants that are right for your space, bring several photos of the planting area at different times of day so they can see what the light is like. In addition to a close photo of the planting location, it’s also helpful to bring a wide photo of the entire area showing structures, trees, or other plantings.

Aquatic Milkweed

Adding native plants to your home supports birds and pollinators!

Wildflowers, grasses and forbs that are original to our ecosystem provide cover, seeds, nectar and nesting materials for our local butterflies, bees and birds.  These native plants also require less water, maintenance and fertilizers than other species.  Native plants are better able to survive droughts and freezes.

Houston Audubon’s Natives Nursery at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary specializes in local native prairie grasses and wildflowers.  These plants are part of our work to improve bird habitat in the Houston area.  Plants are sold to the public and to our partner organizations for large-scale restoration projects within our city.

The plants sold are grown only from seed collected in coastal prairie remnants in Harris or surrounding counties. These seeds were collected and planted by the hands of dedicated Houston Audubon staff and volunteers. The Natives Nursery fills a unique niche by offering native plants not readily found elsewhere.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Natives Nursery, please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@houstonaudubon.org

Plants can be purchased online in our web store with pick-up on Wednesday or Friday mornings from 8 – 11 AM at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. Tax-exempt organizations wishing to purchase plants should email nativesnursery@houstonaudubon.org to place their order.

Please Note: Our plants are all “real-deal” native plants and may look different than the picture. We will do our best to give you the best possible plants available, but we don’t have the ability to swap plants out at pick-up or accept returns. All plant sales are final.
