February 21, 2026:  Winters Bayou

Join Houston Audubon for a morning of birding and exploration at the Winter’s Bayou Bird Sanctuary in San Jacinto County.

Located 11 miles northwest of Cleveland and bordering the Sam Houston National Forest, this 165-acre sanctuary is a crown jewel of the regional ecosystem. It sits in a vital "transition zone" where the Gulf Coastal Prairie, the Piney Woods, and the Blackland Prairie ecoregions converge. Our walk will take us through two distinct tracts featuring upland pine forests and lush mixed pine-hardwood bottomlands.

This land—donated by Houston businessman Malcolm Damuth in the late 80s and 90s—is managed strictly as a wildlife haven. Because of its proximity to the National Forest, it is an excellent area to look for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, which are known to forage and nest in the immediate vicinity.

Future Field Trips

  • March 21: Memorial Park Eastern Glades

    Registration opens February 22.
Arguably Houston’s best public park, the Eastern Glades provides birders and nature enthusiasts of all kinds to enjoy this lush urban oasis. Catch early migrants such as Vireos and Wilson’s Warblers and stroll the boardwalks looking for gallinules and bullfrogs. Bring a packed lunch and picnic with us in the meadow before the summer heat is here!

  • April 25: Bolivar Flats (morning)/High Island (afternoon)

    Registration opens March 22
The best part about living on the Upper Texas Coast is spring migration. You’ll be blown away by the diversity of shorebirds at Bolivar Flats as well as seabirds like gulls, pelicans, and several species of terns. Songbird migration on High Island is equally spectacular-best time for viewing is afternoon/early evening. Prepare to see several species of warblers, tanagers, and buntings. We’ll take a break for lunch after Bolivar Flats and then meet up at Boy Scout Woods at 2pm. Anyone left standing can join us at Smith Oaks and the world-famous rookery.

  • May 2: Russ Pitman Park/Nature Discovery Center

    Registration opens March 22.
Migration isn’t over yet! Catch the spring stragglers here at this small park in the heart of Bellaire. Very easy viewing and plenty of places to rest.
