Bird-Friendly Spaces is a FREE program for the entire Houston community to join and actively support birds. The program aims to connect all Houstonians to the wonder and beauty of nature while improving life for birds, people, and our city. H-E-B works to champion sustainability initiatives throughout its own operations and through partnerships with environmental organizations across the Lone Star State. “H-E-B is delighted to partner with Houston Audubon to support healthy habitats for birds that contribute to functioning ecosystems,” said Anahi Villarruel, Project Manager H-E-B Environmental Affairs.

On October 20, Houston Audubon celebrated the connection between art and nature at its annual fundraising dinner, Avian Affair. Honorary Co-Chairs, Isabelle Scurry Chapman and Jim Blackburn, along with the Avian Affair Art Committee drew up a fun evening at The Revaire including a seated dinner for 275 guests, silent auction featuring works from 19 artists, a visit from art cars, raptor experience, stilt walkers, and more colorful fun, all in the name of raising awareness and funds to protect local habitat for birds and wildlife and create equitable opportunities for people to enjoy nature-based experiences.

At Houston Audubon’s Purple Martin Watch Parties, sponsored this year by CenterPoint Energy, the community is invited to gather and witness the wonder of Purple Martin flying patterns as they come together to roost every night. During the parties, Houston Audubon staff and volunteers are on hand to educate attendees about Purple Martins, their amazing journey, and how people can help protect these birds. These free, family-friendly events are fun for all ages.

Houston Audubon Society is pleased to announce it is applying for renewal of accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance that recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards. Accreditation provides the public with the assurance that the land trust displaying the accreditation seal meets established standards for organizational quality and permanent land conservation.
Houston Audubon is excited to announce that the new Entergy Coastal Natives Nursery at the Hulsey Coastal Operations Center in High Island is operational, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on April 12, 2022. Houston Audubon was awarded an environmental grant from Entergy Texas to build the new nursery, which will provide greater availability and access to native plants critical to birds, bugs, and other native wildlife. Specifically, Houston Audubon will be able to increase its native plant nursery capacity for plant distribution to individuals and organizations in the Gulf Coast region.
Houston Audubon is excited to announce that we have broken ground on the new Clint and Mary Frances Morse Field Station in High Island, Texas. The new field station will serve as coastal headquarters for the staff and volunteers at High Island, as well as provide facilities for a variety of educational programs, workshops, and scientific research to promote conservation. This 1700 sq. ft modern structure will include office space, a large conference room, restrooms, an ample kitchen, storage, and a screened-in porch.

In honor of Earth Month, local land trusts are highlighting the work being done to conserve land, strengthen communities, and create a healthier planet. Land trusts have conserved more than 60 million acres of land across the United States. Here in the Gulf Coast region, four land trusts – Bayou Land Conservancy, Galveston Bay Foundation, Houston Audubon, and Katy Prairie Conservancy – are protecting our natural world — our water, wildlife and open space — for all people, forever.
