Wild Wednesday
High Island Volunteer Training
The new McGovern Canopy Walkway in Smith Oaks is bringing lots of new visitors to the sanctuary. Many of these visitors don’t know much about birds and the Texas Coast and they have lots of questions. We would like to have volunteers on the canopy walkway and the levy trail to answer questions and help visitors get a good look at nesting birds. Will you help?
There will be a Zoom meeting February 10, at 6:30 pm that will give participants an introduction to this program, the history and natural history of Smith Oaks and answer questions. The Zoom meeting will be followed by two Smith Oaks field trips February 11, 9 -11am and February 12, 1:30 – 3:30 pm, so participants can become more familiar with the sanctuary before volunteering. (Both field trips will cover the same information) We will meet in Smith Oaks off Old Mexico Rd in front of the new bathrooms. Handouts including sanctuary aerial photos will be available at the field trips.
Volunteers who already work at High Island and would like to learn more about Smith Oaks are welcome to join the Zoom meeting and the field trips.

High Island Work Party
Meet us at this internationally known birding hot spot and help us beautify one of our 4 nature sanctuaries here, improving both the visitor infrastructure and wildlife habitat. This is a great opportunity to get outside while making a difference.
Volunteers who help out at High Island Work Parties are treated to a delicious meal prepared by our lunch crew.
Work parties are held once a month, October through March on the second Saturday of the month. We start work around 8:30 AM and work until about noon, when we break for lunch, provided by Houston Audubon and prepared by the lunch crew. Lunch at the picnic area of Boy Scout Woods is a good chance to visit with other volunteers and recharge from a morning of exercise and work (socially distanced, of course!) . After lunch, we take about an hour to tie up any loose ends and clean up. Please bring your own refillable water bottles and lots of ice water.
COVID Health Considerations
We will be modifying the format of this and all of our volunteer events and will make changes as needed to keep volunteers and staff healthy.
Edith L Moore Nature Sanctuary work day
Join us at the Edith Moore Nature Sanctuary for a morning of sanctuary maintenance. We work 9 AM – 12 PM, once a month on the 3rd Saturday from October through March. Activities can include trail maintenance, litter pick-up, native gardening, and invasive species removal. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors and meet like-minded friends! Please make sure to dress appropriately for getting wet and muddy. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and work or gardening gloves.
Covid considerations: We are trying to make our volunteer days as normal as possible while being conscious of the health of our volunteers and staff. We will be taking precautions to make the work as safe as we can, and expect volunteers to be a part of that effort. For this reason we are limiting signups to 12 volunteers per event and will be making other modifications to our typical format.
All volunteers must pre-register at least a week in advance using the link below.

Free to participate.
We meet at 9:45 AM at the red "X" marked on the map above. The competition starts at 10 AM and lasts till noon.
The address of the park is 3500 Eldridge Pkwy South 77082. For more information: maweber@houstonaudubon.org
