Red-cockaded Woodpecker
Picoides borealis

Family: (Picidae) Woodpeckers

Preferred Habitat: Mature pine forests.

Seasonal Occurrence: Rare in all seasons.

Notes: Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are a federally-listed Endangered Species. Jesse Jones State Forest close to Conroe is the best location in our area to find them. Females and males look very similar; the small red "cockade" of the male is often not visible. Nest sites may be recognized by the oozing white pine sap next to the holes.
