Preferred Habitat: Forests and woodlands

Seasonal Occurrence: Uncommon December through February.

Notes by Susan Billetdeaux: Dark-eyed Juncos have very distinctive gray and white plumage with light-colored bills, making them easy to recognize. Their long tails have white outer tail feathers and are particularly noticeable in flight. Although there are several color variations and sub-species, many backyard birdwatchers are content to just call them juncos. Abundant in woodlands and wooded suburbs throughout the northeast, they are less common in Texas. This species is primarily found in winter and may be seen at backyard feeders. They are usually seen in small flocks.
