Anna's Hummingbird
Calypte anna
Family: (Trochilidae) Hummingbirds
Preferred Habitat: Gardens, anywhere suitable flowers are found.
Seasonal Occurrence: Rare in winter.
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Notes: A very common bird in the far West, Anna's Hummingbird is occasionally found on the Upper Texas Coast in winter. When present, it makes its presence very noticeable as males in particular are quite vocal and aggressive. The somewhat larger size of Anna's Hummingbird sets it apart from the more common Ruby-throated and Rufous Hummingbirds. Both the gorget and crown of males are dark rose red. Females and immatures are easily confused with more common hummingbirds.
