It felt like the presentation went very well on Saturday, February 17, 2018, and the people I met at the Houston Audubon Volunteer Appreciation Picnic seemed very excited!
Photo gallery of herps seen at Edith Moore during the survey.
We found a bunch of herps during the day on Saturday, and unfortunately nothing that night or the next morning. It felt like a cold front had started to move through. Regardless, here's the results from the latest Herp Survey.
1x Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)
2x Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis)
2x Rough Earth Snakes (Haldea striatula)
1x Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis)
1x Bronze Frog (Lithobates [Rana] clamitans)
1x (Caught) Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei)
1x Rio Grande Chirping Frog (Eleutherodactylus cystignathoides)
4x Common Five-Lined Skinks (Plestiodon fasciatus)
1x Gulf Coast Toad (Incilius nebulifer)
Also, as I was leaving I definitely heard Gray Tree Frogs (Hyla versicolor) calling from the vicinity of the pond. I leaped from my vehicle in search of them but unfortunately could not find any. They called a few more times as I was walking away in what I can only assume was an attempt to mock me.
Note from Bethany Foshée, Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary Manager: the Gray Tree Frogs are BIG news! This is the first record we have of them here at Edith Moore in known Houston Audubon history.
All the specimens caught have been uploaded to iNaturalist. Link to the iNaturalist project.
