Teams may consist of 2-6 people. Each teammate should have their own fundraising page to share with friends and family. Fundraising can begin as early as March 25 and all donations must be submitted by midnight on May 14.
Big Day birders must choose 1 consecutive 24-hour period between the dates of April 13 and May 13. Birding teams don’t require all members to be in the exact same spot. As long as everyone is birding in the same general area, a bird sighting (visual or auditory) confirmed by at least two teammates counts for the whole group.
Each team must raise a minimum of $50 to be eligible for prizes
Count must be conducted within the state of Texas within the Birdathon birding time frame of April 13-May 13.
Birds can be identified either by sight or sound.
Birds must be alive, wild, and unrestrained. Injured birds may be counted if wild and unrestrained. Eggs do not count as birds. Neither ornamental waterfowl nor escaped cage birds can be counted.
Count only full species as indicated by the following recognized checklists: American Bird Association, Houston Outdoor Nature Club’s Ornithology Group, Texas Parks and Wildlife, or the Texas Bird Record Committee.
Birds identified as one of a species group (e.g. Lesser/Greater Scaup, Empidonax Flycatcher, Western/Semipalmated Sandpiper, etc.) may be counted as a species if no other in that group is counted.
Any information regarding bird sightings may be used during the event.
Teams may review posted information at various sign-in or registration booths at parks, sanctuaries and refuges during the course of your visit.
We highly encourage teams to keep an eBird checklist which can be reviewed.
Teams are required to submit reports, preferably linked to an eBird checklist. Please do so by midnight on May 14.
Donations must be submitted by midnight on May 14.
