We rely on volunteers to achieve our goals. In fact, without volunteers, we would not exist!
Founded by volunteers in 1969, the mission of Houston Audubon is to advance the conservation of birds and positively impact their supporting environments.
From supporting our staff at our headquarters, to maintaining trails on our Bird Sanctuaries, to increasing appreciation and understanding of birds throughout Houston, and more, volunteers are the lifeblood of Houston Audubon!

Long-term and skills-based volunteer roles

Extending the work of Houston Audubon Natives Nursery at Edith L. Moore, our High Island nursery location is growing out dozens of coastal-adapted species for restoration projects on all of our sanctuaries.

High Island Work Days are held once a month, October through March on the second Saturday of the month. We start work around 8:30 AM and work until about noon, when we break for lunch, provided by Houston Audubon and prepared by the lunch crew. Activities range from sanctuary general maintenance to habitat restoration.

Do you love the trails at Edith L. Moore? Then you might want to consider volunteering with the Tuesday Trail Crew! Projects include boardwalk construction and maintenance, litter pickups and trail trimming.

Houston Audubon is looking for volunteers at our world-class urban wildlife haven, Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary.

RV Volunteer Caretakers - High Island SanctuariesHook up your RV for free at High Island in exchange for 24 hours of volunteer service per week. Volunteers will conduct a wide range of tasks at our bird sanctuaries while based at our Coastal Operations Center.

If you're new to birding and want to learn more this is a great way to get involved! Contribute to a body of knowledge that will help researchers and bird conservationists with their work for years to come by participating in a bird survey. For more information check out this page listing all of the bird surveys around greater Houston.

Join this important community science project where you can make a difference by collecting data that will help us figure out how we can protect migrating birds from window strike deaths. This project is sponsored by Houston Audubon along with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Texan By Nature, and other partners.
Volunteering as a Group
If you are interested in your group working with us, please email us at volunteer@houstonaudubon.org. Two months lead time and funding support are needed to develop a project. Note: Small groups and families are also welcome to join us for our regularly scheduled work parties.
