Event parking is available at the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church that shares a border with the Edith Moore Sanctuary. Please park on the west side of the lot along the fence, and you will see a direct entrance to the sanctuary (please do not walk along Memorial Drive). Once through the gate, you'll see a sign directing you to the cabin. It is a short 2-3 minute walk.

Meet us at this internationally known birding hot spot and help us beautify one of our 4 nature sanctuaries here, improving both the visitor infrastructure and wildlife habitat. This is a great opportunity to get outside and meet other like minded people while making a difference.

High Island Spring Migration Birding Tour Guides Volunteer Training - postponed
Become equipped to lead birding tours at our High Island Sanctuaries during Spring migration this April and May. Three tours are scheduled a day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during Spring Migration, and each tour will require two leaders. Strong birding knowledge is helpful, but not necessary. (Although we do welcome and appreciate more experienced birders!)
The training will include topics such as:
• How to work with people in an outdoor setting
• Delivering an engaging presentation
• Birding as a group
• Background information about High Island, Houston Audubon, and the flora and fauna of the Bolivar region of Texas
• Managing group dynamics
• Safety protocols, sanctuary rules
We are offering two training dates for your convenience: Wednesday March 18th and Saturday March 21st.
Volunteers who attend will be expected to commit to leading a minimum of 5 tours during the 2020 Spring Migration season.
Dos Vacas Muertas - Spring Migration Preparation work party - canceled
Join us at our Dos Vacas Muertas Bird Sanctuary on the west end of Galveston Island for a morning of sanctuary maintenance that will help prepare this habitat for the spring bird migration. Tasks will include removing brush to make room for protective fencing, trimming trails, and non-native invasive plant removal.

Come help Houston Audubon clean up the beach! Not only will this activity reduce the amount of plastics that our shorebirds and wildlife are exposed to, but clean-ups provide great opportunities to witness the wildlife of Bolivar, the activity on the ship channel, and experience hands-on conservation. All ages are welcome. We hope you can join us!

Join us at the Raptor and Education Center at Sims Bayou for a morning of gardening and sanctuary maintenance. We work 9 AM – 12 PM, once a month on the 3rd Saturday, September through May. Activities include trail maintenance, filling bird feeders and baths, litter pick-up, native gardening, and invasive species removal. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors and meet like-minded friends! Bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent & gloves/clippers if you have them. Wear closed-toe shoes & long pants. Bring sack lunch if desired. Children of any age are welcome with their parent/chaperone. (Minimum age without a parent/chaperone is 14 years.) There is a maximum number of 15 participants at a workday.

High Island Spring Migration Volunteer Picnic and Season kickoff - postponed
This is an opportunity for all High Island volunteers to gather and enjoy some camaraderie before the busy season launches, as well as a time for training for new Spring volunteers and those returning volunteers who would like a refresher.
Houston Audubon provides the main dish, volunteers are asked to bring a side or dessert as a potluck contribution.
We hope to see you there and are all looking forward to another awesome Spring Migration with our volunteers!
Lost Bird Project Exhibit - canceled
The Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, Houston Audubon, and The Bryan Museum in Galveston cordially invite you to the opening of the Lost Bird Project Exhibit.
Eskimo Curlew Sculpture Unveiling - canceled
A six-foot permanent memorial sculpture of the Eskimo Curlew and a special exhibit of five extinct birds, all part of The Lost Bird Project by artist Todd McGrain, will be unveiled on March 29. The exhibit is presented by Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, Houston Audubon, and The Bryan Museum.
