Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens)

Bird Gallery Index

Snow Goose

Family: (Anatidae) Ducks, Geese, and Swans

Preferred Habitat: Fields and marshes.

Seasonal Occurrence: Abundant in winter.

Notes: Huge flocks of Snow Geese are a spectacular winter sight on the Katy Prairie. We are fortunate to have some of the largest winter concentrations in the country. Snow geese occur in two color morphs: white and gray. The dark morph used to be considered a separate species - "Blue Goose". Intermediate morphs of varying color pattern occur. Snow Geese spend their days foraging in fields and marshes and their nights floating on the relative safety of water.
