White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus)

Bird Gallery Index

White-tailed Kite White-tailed Kite image © Robert McFarlane.

Family: (Accipitridae) Hawks and Allies

Preferred Habitat: Coastal plain.

Seasonal Occurrence: Common throughout the year. Breeds in our area.

Notes: The White-tailed Kite is one of our more common hawks. Its range appears to be expanding. Adult males and females have similar plumage. Juveniles resemble adults, with some brown markings. According to David Sarkozi, White-tailed Kites prefer to perch in small trees and wires. They are not typically found on telephone poles. Coastal refuges on the Bolivar Peninsula are good locations to search for them.
