Eared Grebe (Podilymbus nigricollis)

Bird Gallery Index

Family: (Podicipedidae) Grebes

Preferred Habitat: Ponds and lakes

Seasonal Occurrence: Common fall through spring

Notes:   Eared Grebes are most common on the Upper Texas Coast in winter, so we primarily see them in non-breeding plumage, in muted shades of black, gray, and white. Their breeding plumage is identified by a black neck and golden-yellow "ear tufts". Eared Grebes are gregarious and can be found in large flocks. In the winter they prefer coastal lakes and bays.
