The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) has announced their intent to cancel the proposed project that would have connected Galveston Island to the Bolivar Peninsula with a bridge across Galveston Bay. TXDOT began to study options to improve traffic flow between Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula several years ago. In 2000, a feasibility study was completed that looked at various options, including a tunnel. That study concluded that a bridge was the most feasible alternative. Following that study, in 2005, a more detailed environmental and financial study of the bridge was begun. After a careful examination of the tolling feasibility, project costs, design requirements, and environmental impacts associated with this project, it was determined that the development of this project should not proceed further at this time. The cost of the project was determined to be prohibitive. Most likely the bridge will come up again in 5 to10 years, so we all need to be alert.
