Caddo National Grasslands: Saturday, December 15, 2007
Greetings! Welcome to the Caddo NG CBC. We will meet at the campground/boat ramp parking lot on the north side of Coffee Mill Lake. We will divide into 4-5 groups and cover the circle from 7 AM to 4-5 PM. Key birding areas include Coffee Mill Lake, a large lake replete with duck hunters and poachers alike, several small to mid-sized "grassland" fragments that produce LeConte's Sparrows and has possibility for a lot of great sparrows, ag fields with longspurs, and even some mature pine woods that have Pine Warbler and I'm hoping Bachman's Sparrows at some point. For an idea of the count circle, google for Caddo National Grasslands and Coffee Mill Lake, the lake is just above the centroid of the circle. This count is also not for the weak of heart. The reason is that the Caddo NG people offer deer hunts on the weekends throughout the CBC window, so there are numerous deer hunters shooting at first light. Hunting is only for about the first 2 hours, so it's not bad after that. Orange vests are strongly recommended, even though we tend to stick to open areas like the lake early in the morning. We typically meet at the Pizza Hut in Bonham from 4-5 PM (as late as 7) until we are done tallying up the count. We readily welcome any and all birders, including novices, from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, or anywhere! See you there. Contact Doug Wood (email preferred), or phone at 580-745-2272 (that's my office phone with voice mail).

Dallas County: Saturday, December 15, 2007
The Dallas count circle is centered at the intersection of Inwood Road and Cedar Springs and is divided into twelve zones for easier canvassing. Parties of observers are sent out under the leadership of "zone leaders" to cover pre-set zones within the count circle. You do not have to be an expert birder. The only qualifications are that you can pay $5.00, be able to count, and have a pair of binoculars. The $5.00 helps Audubon cover CBC program costs (such as database/web costs, and the publication of the CBC results summary). The weather tends to be cool and occasionally rainy. A review of the last few Dallas CBCs indicates the low temperature averages in the mid-40s F and the high temperature is in the mid-50s F. Children 18 years and under participate for free. Zone leaders usually try to pair experienced birders with less experienced counters. Jim and Gretchen Peterson will serve as official count compilers again this year. All participants are invited to the "count-down" dinner at 5:30 pm that day to compile the final numbers. The dinner will be at Luby’s Cafeteria, 6221 East Mockingbird Lane, about 2 blocks west of the Abrams intersection. To join a group and for further details, contact Reba Collins by email or phone (evenings) at 972-530-2412. She has maps and zone leader names.

Fort Worth: Saturday, December 15, 2007
The count circle is divided into 18 segments & each usually has an area leader. There will be a countdown dinner at the end of the day at a Luby's restaurant (cafeteria). Contact David Powell, phone 817-246-2354 to register and for further details. Check the Forth Worth Audubon Society web site for updated information as it becomes available.

Hagerman NWR: Saturday, December 15, 2007

Directions to headquarters: From intersection of US 75 and US 82 in Sherman, go west about 1 mile to FM 1417, turn north for about 5.5 miles. Turn west on Refuge Rd and follow signs to headquarters (6 miles more). Contact compiler Wayne Meyer to preregister.

Lake Ray Hubbard: Sunday, December 16, 2007
We had a great count last year with 106 species for Count Day and 108 for count week! Let's try to beat this for the 108th Count if we have enough participants bringing in rarities from the Lake, city parks, wetlands, riparian areas, and flyovers. Those who wish to receive handouts, count forms, rare bird forms and maps should plan on meeting on the north side of Miller Road just across from the old Woodland Basin parking lot at 7:00 AM. We can see if we'll be short or need to group more participants. Maps of the morning meeting place and count areas as well as online printable CBC Forms are posted on the Count's forms & maps web page (click on each area thumbnail). Please plan on meeting at the end of the Count at 5:00 PM at Furr's Family Dining off of Saturn Road for our official tally and dinner (optional). We're looking forward to the Count since it had been a big success in the last couple of years. For further details phone (972) 414-8103 or (214) 864-3228 cell or email compiler Jack Hill. Supported by the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest

McKinney: Wednesday, December 26, 2007

The count begins at 7:00 AM, at the Heard Museum and Sanctuary, located at One Nature Place, McKinney, TX, with coffee and donuts. Maps of the count area, the zones, and a listing of birds observed on pervious counts, will be available the morning of the count. There are 9 zones in the count, including the Museum grounds. If you wish to participate, but are not familiar with the zones or are new to a Christmas Count, just call/email your name and number of people with your party - you will be assigned a zone on the morning of the count or before. Lunch will be provided. There is a $5 registration fee to National Audubon. Please let me know if you are planning to attend, and if you would like to lead one of the zones. If you would like to volunteer feeder watch information, please let me know, or just email me your results. Your feeder must be within the count area (7.5 miles from the Heard Sanctuary). Directions: From US 75 (Central Expressway), take exit 38A East. Proceed 1 mile and turn south on State Highway 5. Go another 3/4 mile and turn left on FM 1378. Seguin Ave., located on the northeast corner of Seguin Ave. (AKA Hwy. 725) and IH 35 on Dec. 30. Participants bring water, drinks, and sack lunches. Contact compiler Anthony Hewetson, telephone 806-252-1213 for more information. Last year's CBC Summary available on the LEAS web site. One of the Muleshoe NWR CBC teams had to cancel - due to an earlier than expected flight out of Lubbock. Consequently, I have had to rearrange the teams a bit. Compilation participation is required and will occur back at the Cavness Science Building after 5:15 PM. Single-sided card stock lists in both alphabetic and phylogenetic orders will be provided, but the compilation will be in phylogenetic order. White River: Saturday, December 29, 2007
Sponsored by Llano Estacado Audubon Society (LEAS). Several people have dropped out and I am now short at least two observers. It is absolutely vital that everyone remaining on the list show up ... and I could use a few more last-minute volunteers! If you are interested, please get in touch with me - soonest - at Anthony Hewetson or (806) 252-1213. LEAS will cover the fees of the first fifteen people who sign up for the count! Remember: we meet at the marina at 7:30 AM, bird the day away, and meet back up at the marina for the countdown and dinner at 5:00 PM. I am strongly encouraging everyone who participates this year to buy a hot meal at the marina/restaurant during our countdown as the folks there have kindly agreed to keep the grill open a little later than usual - just for us! The water levels are good this year, the foliage is fantastic, and several interesting critters were noted during the fall. This could be the best year ever for this count - if enough observers show up! Please sign up. Contact compiler Anthony Hewetson, telephone 806-252-1213 for more information. Last year's CBC Summary available on the LEAS web site. Those of you who plan on participating, please review the list below and make sure that I have included you if I should have. Big Spring: Tuesday, January 1, 2008
The people in Big Spring have turned this count over to the Sponsored by the Midland Naturalists. Circle includes the Big Spring State Park, the City Park, Moss Creek Reservoir, the Colorado River MWD reservoir, Three-mile Lake, Four-mile Lake, the Coahoma area. Quanah: Friday, January 4, 2008
Anybody interested in participating please contact me, Steve Welborn, telephone (940) 839-5345. The circle is near the Texas Panhandle and overlaps into southwestern Oklahoma. It's located on the 100th meridian, so we get both eastern and western species. This is a good count for irruptives, raptors, sparrows, and longspurs. In the last three years some of our best birds include - Tundra Swan, Northern Goshawk, Purple Finch, Golden Eagle, Verdin, White-tailed Kite, American Tree Sparrow and Red Crossbills. CBC fees are covered. This is a fairly rugged count, mostly on ranchland along the Red River. If you have a 4WD vehicle and work boots, you will probably be assigned 2000 acres to yourself.
