The drizzle didn't dampen the spirits of the members of the Indian Shores Garden Club who visited SBUNC on Monday. They came from Crosby to tour the center and watch a special program. After touring the grounds and learning about the native plants, gardens, prairie, and bayou, everyone assembled in the Bayou Barn to learn about Red-tailed hawks, meet Spirit our education Red-tailed hawk, and watch the movie "Pale Male". No one in the group had seen the movie before and everyone truly enjoyed the story of the world's most famous Red-tail from New York City. It was a wonderful morning and Vicki and I enjoyed spending our time with the folks from Crosby. We hope they come again!
 

Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center has been a flurry of activity lately. We have been hosting Westwood Elementary all this week as their 2nd graders prepare to study birds. The students come for an all day field trip experience. They have been enthralled watching the neighborhood egrets, herons, osprey, woodpeckers, chickadees, mockingbirds and assorted other birds. They learned all about native plants and the variety of habitats that support different animals at the nature center. The Gulf Fritillary butterflies are busy laying eggs on the passion vine and a few students also! They were so excited to watch them laying their eggs. They also got up close and personal with a water scorpion in the pond and a variety of dragonfly nymphs. We could not have asked for better weather. We hope to post photos shortly.
