Bayou Buddies J is for Jellyfish Vicki Vroble 12/04/08 3:00 AM It's hard to believe we're already at letter J in our Bayou Buddies class! The students have learned a lot this year and today they explored the world of jellyfish. We watched a sea of jellies on the big screen in the barn, created edible jellyfish out of jello and licorice, transformed ourselves into giant jellyfish and hunted prey with our special tentacles, and made beautiful jellyfish crafts to enjoy at home. There are only 2 more classes before Christmas. Join us for K is for Killdeer on Dec 11 and 12 and L is for Log on Dec 18 and 19.
| Prairie Heritage Day 11/15/08 The Education Team along with Flo Hannah from the Sanctuary Team spent a windy, cold day at Brazos Bend State Park to help celebrate Prairie Heritage Day. Folks visiting our booth made seed mosaics, played a bird migration game and watched a video about the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Flo lead several groups on informative hikes through the prairies at Brazos Bend and Mary Anne gave a bird talk with some of the education birds. Despite the cold weather it was a fun and educational day for everyone!
| Garden Club visits Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center 11/10/08
The drizzle didn't dampen the spirits of the members of the Indian Shores Garden Club who visited SBUNC on Monday. They came from Crosby to tour the center and watch a special program. After touring the grounds and learning about the native plants, gardens, prairie, and bayou, everyone assembled in the Bayou Barn to learn about Red-tailed hawks, meet Spirit our education Red-tailed hawk, and watch the movie "Pale Male". No one in the group had seen the movie before and everyone truly enjoyed the story of the world's most famous Red-tail from New York City. It was a wonderful morning and Vicki and I enjoyed spending our time with the folks from Crosby. We hope they come again!
| Busy times at the nature center 11/06/08
Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center has been a flurry of activity lately. We have been hosting Westwood Elementary all this week as their 2nd graders prepare to study birds. The students come for an all day field trip experience. They have been enthralled watching the neighborhood egrets, herons, osprey, woodpeckers, chickadees, mockingbirds and assorted other birds. They learned all about native plants and the variety of habitats that support different animals at the nature center. The Gulf Fritillary butterflies are busy laying eggs on the passion vine and a few students also! They were so excited to watch them laying their eggs. They also got up close and personal with a water scorpion in the pond and a variety of dragonfly nymphs. We could not have asked for better weather. We hope to post photos shortly.

Girl Scout Green 10/18/08 We hosted a great group of girls today for a Junior Girl Scout Badge and a Brownie Try-it! The Juniors earned their Eco-Action badge and learned about conservation, habitats, famous women from the early conservation movement, and how to make their own paper. The Brownies learned how to make a draft stopper, a personalized paper recycle bin, a soda bottle terrarium, and they planted a native butterfly garden at SBUNC!! WOW! We had a busy Saturday! Thanks to all the great girl scouts and their leaders!
