Houston Audubon Sanctuaries

Houston Audubon meets its mission of promoting birds and conservation of their habitat primarily by owning and managing bird sanctuaries. Its land acquisition program began in 1987 with the purchase of land on the Bolivar Peninsula and has grown steadily since then by further purchases and by donations and bequests. Today it owns 17 sanctuaries in five counties totaling 3,384 acres.

Seadrill Beach Cleanup at Bolivar Flats

Marbled Godwit at Bolivar Flats
Marbled Godwit at Bolivar Flats

Houston Audubon held a beach cleanup with a group of Seadrill volunteers at our Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary Friday, May 3rd. Neither staff nor volunteers could have anticipated blustery weather on the coast this late in spring, but an unusually late season cold front sent winds gusting near 40 mph and temperatures in the 50’s. The group, including family and children of the employees, arrived by charter bus and were greeted by Sanctuary Steward Danny Lynch and Development Director Jessica Jubin. A brief talk about Bolivar Flats and the mission of Houston Audubon was given on the bus.[More]

Beach Nesting Monitoring and Stewardship Program Continues
by Richard Gibbons

Danny Lynch and Alex Chapman

We humans are a successful bunch, evolutionarily speaking that is. Many species have done quite well due to their compatibility with humans, while others were doomed due to their specialization, isolation, or utility. Then there are those species that are holding on, but in steady decline. This is the case for three beach nesting species on the Upper Texas Coast.[More]

S.O.S. Save Our Sanctuaries
Urgent Drought Relief
: The current drought is having a serious impact at our sanctuaries. At the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, drought conditions are causing trees and trees limbs to fall. For safety purposes we need funds for tree removal. It costs $1,500 per day for an insured professional tree cutting crew. On the coast, help is needed to maintain sufficient water levels at Claybottom Pond and for water at our restoration projects. Any amount you can contribute to the drought relief effort is welcome and very appreciated. More information
